Last Friday I did another shoot for Right To Play UK. This time it was of their 5Km fun run at Battersea Park. It was a nice evening and I managed to get some good shots, which Right To Play are using on their website now. Check it out here!

I have been doing freelance work for Right To Play for nearly a year now and have done quiet a few events for them, it has always been a pleasure to work for them and so far I have always been pleased with what I have been able to take. The next event I will be doing for them is their annual football tournament which is held at Chelsea Football Clubs ground. This was the first job I ever did for Right To Play and things have come a long way since then, I am looking forward to it and I will post up some of the photos from the day here.

I also wanted to say that I have a lot more photos from the day that Right To Play did not publish. So if anyone wants any of the photos from the day and wants me to look and see if I can find some more for them, feel free to get in touch with me and I will be more than happy to help out.

Here is a few photos from Friday which I liked:

If you have not already heard the UK has changed it’s copyright law. It is called the “Enterprise and Regulatory Reform Bill” and it received Royal Assent on the 26th April. This bill allows the government to introduce, through regulations, controversial copyright reforms. If a work is deemed to be “orphaned” then it can be used as long as there has been a good enough search to try find out who owns the work.

What does this mean for us?

As photographers we are constantly in a fight to retain the ownership of our images especially with huge social media sites like Facebook and Flickr actually removing metadata from photographs! This really emphasises just how important it is, more than ever before, to have your photographs correctly copyrighted with all of the metadata embedded in the image, as well as using a watermark. Already apps like Marksta are around so you can take precautions when you upload photos from your phone.

This bill is just giving the huge companies potentially more power to go and basically steal photographs and use them for whatever they want without crediting the owner, let alone paying them a penny! Even though the bill has received Royal Assent the proposed copyright changes have not yet been approved by the government, however if it does get approved then all sorts of ridiculous copyright laws could be passed as all MP’s have the power to do is to vote yes or no, they cannot make changes to the bills. Basically all of this is completely ridiculous!

What to do now?

Now is the chance to make a stand, as a photographer I have already signed this e-petition and I think everyone who works in the creative should do the same because it is not just photographs that could be stolen, graphics and artwork can just the same. Here is the link to sign the petition: http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/49422

And if you would like more information and in more detail about the new copyright laws check out this blog post on PetaPixel.

So, a little while ago I said I was working on a new project which involved skiing and LED’s and all sorts of cool stuff. I posted the photos of my brother in the garden skiing and they were just my test shoots. I have now finished the entire project, and I have used flares and smoke grenades as well as the LED lights to get my final photographs. The finished photographs were put into a digital magazine as well as a print version. You can order a copy of the print magazine if you follow this link: http://www.magcloud.com/browse/issue/517929?__r=324799 Alternatively if you are lucky enough to have an iPad get in touch with me and I will give you the instructions for how to install the app onto your iPad so you can view my work in an interactive way, which includes videos of the shoots and some explanation for how I did everything. Here are some of the photos from the shoot, if you want to see more follow this link: http://www.brandonfoto.com/?gallery=flares-smoke-grenades-and-leds Also check out a short video of what went down when we did the shoots:

I use Adobe Lightroom as part of my main workflow. Without it I would be pretty unorganised! Today Adobe have released the beta testing of Lightroom 5. It is free to download and use for a limited time and you can give Adobe feedback. There are a few main features that have been adapted or made better but overall it is the same as Lightroom 4. So I am not sure how many people will upgrade when it comes out, but here is the link to Adobe’s blog explaining everything you need to know about Lightroom 5, check it out. http://blogs.adobe.com/photoshopdotcom/2013/04/lightroom-5-beta-now-available.html

But whilst all of this has been going on I got one of my photographs published in National Geographic Traveller. I am so stoked on this and can’t wait to get some more work out there! Buy a copy if you can, and here is a quick snap of the double page spread:

Unfortunately I have managed to break my mac.I have done everything I can to try repair the hard drive and it turns out the catalogue file is damaged! So now it is in the hands of Apple. Fingers crossed. All I can say is thanks for backup software! The guys at Crashplan have saved my life I think. So even if I cannot get the computer restored it will be a pain to get the files from crashplan and re-build my whole computer but at least I have not lost the files, so I can sleep easy at night! Crashplan is definitely worth checking out if you do not have a good backup going. It is cheap monthly payments that do not even add up to the value of the information that gets backed up so is the most worth while thing I have invested in, in a long time.

On another note, I do have a whole load of new 35mm film scans to add to the website and as soon as I have a working mac again I will get them up for everyone to look at. And on that note I am really getting back into my analogue photography, and I am enjoying the entire process, shooting, developing and then making my own prints. So there will be a lot more 35mm photographs to come soon…

I have been working on a new project for the past couple of months and I will hopefully have some final shoots for it pretty soon! I am focusing on the idea of capturing action and juxtaposing it using a long exposure. I am then using a combination of flash techniques to stop the action. This is just a little teaser of what I have done already, more to come soon!

Chad Dropping In

Chad Light Trails

To take these photographs I set the camera to shoot with rear curtain synchronization. This way the flash would only go off just before the shutter closed. I shot with a long exposure to get these nice long light trails created by the LED’s that my brother was wearing. I positioned the flash so that it was just out of the frame and so it could stop the action at the end of the drop in.

I would also like to just say how amazing Chad was in constructing this entire drop in with a tiny jump to a rail feature (not photographed). It was all built out of wood and PVC so that we did not need any snow! It was an awesome set up and now that it is snowing in the UK we can use it as an actual drop in with snow.

Today I went into London to the Excel exhibition centre for the Active Travel Show. This is where National Geographic announced the winners for their photography competition. We arrived a bit earlier than we expected so had some time to kill, I nervously ambled about not really taking note of any of the stands. My main focus was to just find out the competition results. When the time came for us to sit down and the announcement to be made, we sat at the back whilst the National Geographic Traveller art director and deputy editor tried to get the sound and slide show working. This waiting just kept adding to my nerves! Finally they sorted it out and the presentation was underway, and the first category to be announced was the Action category. This is what I entered and immediately my heart sank when I saw the screen; on it was two of my competitors images, one large and one small photograph. Instantly I thought that the large photograph was the winner and the small one the runner up. However this was not the case as the art director and head judge; Chris Hudson announced I was the winner and turned over to the next slide with my photograph on it! Immediately I was in shock as I really did not expect this to happen!

So as you can imagine I am so stoked! And I am really happy to see that some snowboarding photography can be published and win competitions that would not have even thought about snowboarding before!

Thanks National Geographic!
